Can Dementia Come and Go?

Can Dementia Come and Go? That is often something that goes through a lot of people’s minds when they are dealing with or have a family member diagnosed with dementia. At Freedom Home Care, your home care agency, we have asked some experts and are here to share what they have to say about dementia coming and going.

One morning your loved one is lost and not sure who you are greeting them. The next morning they greet you with a smile and are enjoying the daily newspaper. Could it be that their dementia has gone away and they are progressing? Or is it just a good day?

Often people who are dealing with a loved one suffering from dementia ask this question. The answer is, once someone has been officially diagnosed with dementia, it does not go away; however, it is normal that the condition may vary depending on the person diagnosed.

Symptoms and signs of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease progress at different rates depending on a person. Because there are different stages of the disease, it may feel that there are some progression signs at times, but it does not go away.

Here are 3 reasons why your loved one’s dementia might seem like it is “going away”. Number one is that they are in the earliest stages of dementia. In early stages memory and confusion comes and goes frequently followed by behavior that is “normal”.

Co-existing medical conditions may play a role as well. It is common to see those with dementia and other diseases to feel worse symptoms. This is why it is important for you and medical care teams to not make any assumptions that it is a result from just dementia.

Treatment with dementia medications can also be a reason why your loved one might seem to be “getting rid of dementia”. Yes, the disease cannot be cured, but certain medications can for some time help sharpen the mind. Some of these medications include Aricept (donepezil), Namenda (memantine), and Namazric (donepezil and memantine).
