Mental illness is something that millions of Americans suffer from every day. As 2020 was a year of isolation and quarantine, we felt now more than ever it was important to spread awareness about Mental Health Awareness Month.
About Mental Health Awareness Month
The purpose of Mental Health Awareness Month is to raise awareness and educate the public on mental health stigmas. We at Freedom Home Care believe in recognizing the importance of mental health and have compiled a list of ways to help your senior loved one or someone in need with mental illness.
1. Check-In
If you have family or a friend suffering from mental illness, it’s important to check in on them periodically. Do this to ensure they are in good spirits. Sometimes a simple call or message can brighten someone’s entire day.
2. Get Your Senior Loved One Involved
If you find your elderly loved one is feeling lonely, help them get involved in an activity with others. This helps them know they are not alone. Activities help to engage the mind and assist in memory loss. There are many zoom support groups available online that your family or friend may love.
3. Care for a Pet
Animals offer great companionship and provide an opportunity to stay active. If you are unable to own a pet, volunteering at a shelter is a great way to give back while also helping your mental health. If you have someone young in your life suffering from mental illness, Paws for Patrick is a great resource. It is a non-profit organization that provides service animals for young adults suffering from mental illness.
