Consider a sundae this Sunday for your aging loved one

Often times, we here at Freedom Home Care focus our blogging efforts on ways for elderly individuals to stay safe and healthy while living at home. A lot can change as we grow older, and with that change comes the need to adopt new habits.
Adjustments to diet and nutrition might not have to come with quite as many sacrifices, however, as far as frail elderly are concerned. According to AgingCare.com, “there is a misperception that frail elderly peo

ple should adhere to the same low-fat, low-calorie diet that is recommended for the general population.”
Dr. Amy Ehrlich, associate professor of clinical medicine and interim division head of Montefiore Medical Center’s geriatrics division spoke with AgingCare.com to offer up a little eating enjoyment for older individuals. She says that frail elderly who have experienced substantial weight loss should eat what they like.
“I’ll see a 94-year-old person who is losing weight and he is restricting everything, eating a low-calorie, low-fat diet. It would be better to eat a bowl of ice cream, for the caloric intake!” Dr. Ehlrich explains.
Eggs, cheese, peanut butter and even ice cream can and should be incorporated into a diet. Low-fat milk and cheese are no longer the go-to snacks. In fact, many elderly individuals aren’t interested in eating three large meals. Therefore, small, more frequent meals and snacks might be more desirable – midnight snacks and ice cream sundaes included.
