Autumn. There’s no other season like it.
Fall leaves are changing color. Comfort foods are an indelible part of the menu. Cozy knit sweaters are in style again and the crisp scent of autumn fills the air.
Now is the perfect time for family and friends to get holiday-ready with activities that bring everyone together and create long-lasting memories at the same time.
To help you celebrate the season, Freedom Home Care agency came up with a few easy autumn ideas that seniors can enjoy doing with the help of loved ones.
Create a Fall Wreath
Ring in the season with festive foliage that captures all the colors of autumn. Start by gathering fresh, crisp leaves from outside. Choose a variety of different colors like reds, yellows and greens for a more vibrant look. Take a paper plate and cut out the center. Glue leaves along the plate, covering any white spaces. Add a ribbon to the bottom to finish.
Whip Up Caramel Apples
A signature fall treat, caramel apples are not only tasty, but something even the youngest family members will love. Choose a handful of large apples, red or green, whatever you prefer. Get a package of caramel squares and cook until melted. Dip the apples in the caramel and then add your favorite toppings (nuts, sprinkles, etc.) by rolling the apple in the coating. Place apples on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and refrigerate until solid.
Make Your Own Decorations
While store-bought decorations might be easier and more convenient, homemade ornaments are simply more fun! Get creative by making a ribboned pumkin, pine cone hanger or a pumpkin guy or gal. Search the web for easy ideas or get suggestions from friends. October is a great time to make Thanksgiving and Christmas-themed projects as well.
Welcome in the Trick-or-Treaters
With Halloween right around the corner, seniors can start planning for the holiday in advance. If you have a front yard, enlist family and friends to help put up scary decorations to greet trick-or-treaters. Or get into the holiday spirit by handing out pumpkin pouch goody bags when little ghosts and goblins come knocking at the door.
Enjoy the Sights and Sounds of the Season
It’s the time of year when people are spending more time outdoors in the cool, fall air. Go for a walk in the park and enjoy the seasonal changes of the trees and shrubbery. Listen to crunching sounds of children walking through fallen leaves. Smell the aroma of pumpkin-spice treats that fill the crisp autumn air.
