Are Herbal Supplements Effective?

Many seniors dutifully take vitamins and other supplements to keep themselves healthy and make up for lacking nutrition.  But what exactly are those pills made of?  And are they doing your body any good?
Recent studies have identified various herbal supplement ingredients and their effectiveness.  As many people know, the FDA doesn’t regulate many supplements. Because of this, many pills do not need to state exactly what is in their product. It becomes unclear if what they claim is in the supplements is actually accurate. And that’s exactly what the researchers found.
Using a system of identifying the supplements’ DNA, it was found that over a third of them had none of the plant that was listed on the label.  Nearly 60 percent included other plants not listed on bottle, and some of the additives were toxic.  Not exactly what someone is expecting when they purchase an herbal remedy for the flu season.
Even if the vitamins and supplements are pure, it does not mean that they are needed or even good for the body.  For example, it has been shown that too much vitamin A can be bad for bones.  But few women who are already in danger of osteoporosis have been told that.
So how is someone supposed to get the vitamins and nutrients that he or she needs?  The best answer is: eat a well-balanced and healthy diet.
Eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, and proteins will give the body all of the nutrients that it needs to perform well.  The nutrients from food are easier for the body to absorb and use.  It’s a safer and more delicious way to stay healthy. Talk to your doctor to find out what the best vitamin supplements are for you or if there is a better alternative to getting the balanced nutrition you need.
